Rock of Cashel

Today we were headed for Sligo, where we would spend three nights. The drive was easy, and as we often found to be the case, took less time than we had anticipated. We stopped along the way in Strokestown to visit the Famine Museum. We had lunch there – baked potatoes and salad with apple tart for dessert. We spent some time in the museum, which not only laid out the history of the estate, but of the period of the Great Famine itself, and was very informative. After a quick walk-through of the gardens, we were back on the road. We arrived in Sligo in the late afternoon, where we easily found Treetops B&B, run by Doreen and Ronan. We were given a room on the ground floor – a bit small, unfortunately, but we figured we wouldn’t be spending much time in it anyway, and we could always go sit in the lounge. After unloading our bags and taking a few minutes to regroup, we walked down to the city centre (an easy 10-minute walk), where we wandered along the river, peeked in the windows of a number of shops and restaurants, and then made our way back to a pub called the Belfry, where I had salad and some fried mushrooms, mom a panini, and we watched the final few holes of the British Open. Back to Treetops, where we unpacked a few things and settled in for the night.
